Jakki’s Top 10 Movies
This list is constantly changing, AS IT SHOULD, as I watch and rewatch every cinematic gem in history…..so this page will probably always be updated at some point!
I also feel kinda bad leaving some major films I really enjoy out of this list…….I’ll just have to write reviews on how awesome they are
- The Fall – “Presented” by David Fincher and Spike Jonze, so you know it’s going to blow your mind. Simply stunning cinematography, brilliant acting and moving plot makes this movie one of my favourites ever. If only the cinematography in every other film was as good as in The Fall. Taking 4 years to film around the world, its not hard to see just why this took so long to make! More people need to see this movie.
- The Matrix Trilogy (yes I know not many people like the last two sequels but I personally view the trilogy as one long movie.) – The issues, themes and messages portrayed just puts this entire movie franchise in a class of its own. And Hugo Weaving…one of the best villains ever!
- Memento – A class movie from a class director. Everything from the editing to the screenplay makes this a movie I can watch any time, any day. This movie is so well made its gotta come close to pretty darn PERFECT.
- Pan’s Labyrinth - Like Alice in Wonderland only darker. I love the fantasy surreal type elements in this film – Guillermo Del Toro just pulls off the scary creatures/scary reality of war and brutality in this film so well.
- Inglourious Basterds - Personally,I think this is Tarantino’s best movie he has done to date. The script is just so perfect, every line is just incredible to watch. The soundtrack is well worth listening to as well, he really has a knack for picking perfect music for each scene!
- Moulin Rouge - I love the liveliness, the themes, the chroeography, the mish mash of songs … pretty much everything in this movie. Yes it’s gaudy but Baz Lurhmann just directs this so well. Nicole Kidman is a great singer, but Ewan McGregor is just in a class of his own. So powerful, and his crying at the end…gets me every time.
- Spirited Away – Miyazaki’s best film to date. The combination of 2D animation and CGI makes this such a pleasure to watch. I love, love LOVE fantasy movies, and this alice in wonderland-esque story is so powerful, emotional and riveting…..I loved every minute of it.
- Burn After Reading - My favourite Coen brothers film. Clever dialogue and hilariously smart plot as well as amazing acting makes this movie well worth watching..over and over again. Brad Pitt is just seriously so funny as a vapid stereotypical personal trainer, and John Malkovich is hilarious as an angry retired CIA officer. The end scene of this movie sums it all up really – ahhh I love J. K. Simmons!
- Grindhouse - Tarantino’s Death Proof and Rodriguez’s Planet Terror – who knew B movies could be so fun to watch?! Death Proof contains so much hot air, literally, but its the script which keeps things fresh and interesting. I completely admire Tarantino just for the simple fact that his character’s dialogue is always so ridiculously perfect. Seeing Bruce Willis as some crazy zombie military dude in Planet Terror is also pretty funny, and you gotta admit, Cherry’s machine gun leg is pretty goddamned cool. Josh Brolin does a fantastic villainous portrayal as a crazy zombie doctor too!
- Sunset Boulevard - One of the classics, but I just love how well made this movie is. I love All About Eve, which is similar to Sunset Boulevard, but nothing can top Gloria Swason in Sunset Boulevard. The acting and noir style sets it apart from the rest, as well as the script which sets everything up for the final momentous scene at the end. This is one of those movies which will always be considered one of the great film noirs and rightly so too!
